Swirl marks are caused by dirt and dust particles rubbing against the car's paintwork during washing; the Grit Guard helps prevent this. The Grit Guard simply sits at the bottom of the bucket. Each time you dip your Meguiar's Microfiber Wash Mitt into the bucket for more soapy water, you also rub it against the Grit Guard. This helps remove the dirt and ensures that the dirt stays at the bottom of the bucket.
